One system, one owner
Every part of an operation’s state should sit in a view where somebody would notice it change. Coverage beats sophistication: an elegant metric nobody watches is worth less than a plain one somebody owns.
About
MOCR — Mission Operations Control Room — was NASA’s name for the rooms in Building 30 from which Gemini and Apollo flights were controlled. We borrowed it, because the job has the same shape. We make no claim to have coined it.
01 / The name
The room was four tiers of consoles under a map screen. Nobody in it watched everything. Each controller owned one system and watched only that, and the room as a whole knew the state of the vehicle because every part of that state belonged to someone who would notice it move.
Its other habit matters more. The hard decisions were written down before the mission, while there was time to think — the conditions under which you continue, and the conditions under which you stop. When the moment came, the room was not forming a judgement under pressure. It was executing one it had already made calmly, and polling each console in turn to confirm the evidence still supported it.
That is the argument of this company, transposed. A trading operation is a complex system running in real conditions, and it deserves the same treatment: every part of its state owned and visible, and the decision to stop written down before the drawdown rather than during it.
02 / Attribution
To be unambiguous: the name is NASA’s, not ours. The Mission Operations Control Rooms were built in 1965 at what was then the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, and ran Gemini, Apollo, and Skylab flights, before the rooms were reconfigured for the Shuttle era. MOCR 2, the room from which Apollo 11 was flown, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1985 and has since been restored to its Apollo-era configuration. The facility now carries the name of Christopher C. Kraft Jr., NASA’s first flight director.
We use the term as a homage to a standard of operational practice. We are not affiliated with NASA, and imply no endorsement by it.
